Snowflake

So, I am writing a novel. Or trying to, anyway. And I have issues with plot. Most of my novel attempts have rambled tunelessly for 70 pages before I got disgusted with them and gave up.  My problem was that I was going off a dream I had or an idea that could carry a short story, but not a book.  A long work of fiction requires many happenings, events, and conflicts.  I realized I needed to have some of these figured out before embarking on a sincere attempt at a novel. The Sentence

I have always had diffuculty with long writing projects, particularly building a plot complex enough to carry a few hundred pages. My MFA program was all about the sentence.  When my professors spoke of the sentence, it always sounded capitalized: The Sentence. Picking apart sentences, writing beautiful sentences, and being sure that nothing on the page was written thoughtlessly. Examining sentences is useful for learning how to write originally, play with language, and create stunning, brief descriptions. But focusing on the almighty sentence detracted from other important aspects of writing fiction. As a result, I got an MFA without learning the importance of story-building and plot.  My gorgeous, show-off sentences had nothing to  hang onto.
