Making the Most of a Comic Convention

A few weeks ago, Jeremy and I attended Planet Comicon in Kansas City. It was our maiden voyage as Outland Entertainment, and we have a pretty full convention schedule this year. Both of us were on the lookout for ways to improve our con experience and increase our chances of recouping some of the costs of attending.     Cons aren’t just about selling wares. They are also about networking – something that I have always sucked at because I am shy. They help you reach potential fans and give you opportunities to learn from professionals in the business. Art Opening Pics

The art opening went well. It was over a hundred degrees that day, so the First Friday crowd was a little thinner than usual, but there was a good turnout nonetheless. As I mentioned in the previous post, there was so much crap to do for the opening. And since nothing can be easy, there had been several poorly-timed disasters (crashed computer, broken toilet, plague of black ants) that also demanded our attention. We got everything done with less than an hour to spare. The opening went by in a blur of friendly faces, handshakes, and plastic cups of wine. It was quite fun. Art Opening

My husband has been working hard on getting pieces done for Haven. He’s displaying the first 8 pages in a gallery show starting this Friday. Our busy schedules – work, trips, etc. – created a perfect storm wherein Jeremy had less than a month to finish a poster-sized pencil drawing and less than two weeks to finish three more drawings. Additionally, all ten of the images needed to be colored, lettered, printed, and framed. The art opening is on Friday evening and the pictures are still at the printer’s. We hope to pick them up sometime today so we can hang them up in an orderly fashion at the gallery. And then there is the other stuff that goes into an opening – providing…
